The Book of Heat: A Four-Season Guide to Wood and Coal Heating
Published in Paperback by Stephen Greene Pr (September, 1985)
Average review score:

A great, warm, technically inclined hippy book on wood heatI picked this book up used in Ithaca, NY, in 1992 or so, with the intention of giving it as a gift, but fell in love with it, not just for all the great information on how to run a wood stove efficiently, but for the charming digressions, the stories, the line and ink illustrations, the New Englandy feel of it all, and for the warm brotherly tone of the writing. The tragedy is that in the 10 years between buying it and installing my first wood stove, I lost the book. The redemption is that I've found a used copy here for under $5!
Any one of the digressions alone is enough to justify purchase of this book: there are discussion on how to get timber out of the forest, when to buy firewood, what a wood fired zamboni is like, etc. etc. etc.
Buy a copy of this book while it's still available, even if you don't have a wood stove. By the time you're done reading it, you'll want one!

The Boston Tea Party
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (June, 1964)
Average review score:

The best accountThis book has aged remarkably well. First published in 1964, it remains the best account of the Boston Tea Party in or out of print. In fact, it's something of a classic. It's easy to read, tells the story in all its complexity (which involves going beyond Boston to look at how opposition to the Tea Act played out in Charleston, Philadelphia, and New York), and places the "tea party" in the larger story of the American Revolution.

The Boy Who Ran to the Woods
Published in Hardcover by Atlantic Monthly Press (30 October, 2000)
Average review score:

Beautiful, uncoventional story of redemption through natureThis is a well crafted book. In story and illustration, it reminds me of children's books of 30 years ago; the tone is soft tone and colors subdued. Harrison, a wild man of a novelist and poet, tells the story of his youth in northern Michigan and how he came to find peace in the natural world. Pohrt's illustrations are evocative of small town life and the plants and animals in the woods beyond. The book sneaks up on you--the tale is simple, understated, but also strangely comforting and, ultimately, unforgettable.

A Boy, a Ball, and a Dream: The Marvin Wood Story
Published in Hardcover by Scott Publications (September, 1991)
Average review score:

The "real" Hoosiers StoryHaving watched the movie "Hoosiers" a number of times, I was quite pleasantly surprised by this powerful account of the real-to-life coach of the Milan Indians. . .The movie certainly missed the point of what actually happened to the young man who crafted one of basketball's most memorable legends. . .
From the joy of the victory with Milan to the pain of losing his only son to drugs, the Marvin Wood story is a touching account of an educator who knew who to inspire. . .
If you like basketball and you have ever rooted for the underdog you will love this book. . .

For bibliophiles and students of publishing historyVery highly recommended and informative reading for bibliophiles and students of publishing history, British Wood-engraved Book Illustration 1904-1940: A Break With Tradition by Joanna Selborne is a simply fascinating look at a unique graphic art and an historically important aspect of publishing history -- the art and practice wood-engraved book illustration. Building Fine Furniture from Solid Wood
Published in Hardcover by Betterway Pubns (February, 1994)
Average review score:

Building Fine Furniture from Solid WoodThis writer speaks from 50 years of experience and it shows. I love his common sense approach to working with the wood and letting its beauty show. I prefer his simple lines approach with some caracter. He believes in slightly rounded corners so the pieces seem friendly and warm on their own. I love his use of slight curves versis only just straight lines. His instructions are ideal for us who are doing things by ourselves because that is the way he does it also. Over the years he has developed lots of helpers that work and make tasks not only possible, but easy. He is a thinker and obviously enjoys taking the time to let the project be designed to be all it can be to please and delight the eye. He just makes sense and you know he knows what he is doing. When he tells you something, you know you need to listen. I found this book in the library and could have photocopied any part I wanted on my copier. However, this is a keeper for "fatherly advise" when ever I get to a step beyond what I have done before.

Bumper to Bumper: A Traffic Jam
Published in Paperback by Frances Lincoln Limited (December, 1999)
Average review score:

Great book for kids who love cars and trucks. My 2 year old loves this book, but it would be a good book for younger toddlers too. Very simple with pictures of all sorts of cars and trucks. The book follows a traffic jam from start to finish. Some of the pictures continue to the next page to show the traffic jam. A great and fun way for toddlers to learn the names of all kind of vehicles.
